Work

THIS USED TO BE GAY, April 2026, Dixon Place, NYC

Originally a on-the-streets walking tour of gay haunts of the East Village which was sponsored by Queer/Art, back in May of 2019. This is the "sit-down walking tour" version, developed for indoors! THIS USED TO BE GAY / below 14th Street is a historic and personal sit-down walking tour via Google written and performed by Moe Angelos of The Five Lesbian Brothers and The Builders Association. Directed by Ain Gordon, this work traces a Lower Manhattan daisy chain from the 1960’s secretive twilight world of the “introvert” to the twenty-first century’s married-with-children legit queer lifestyle by examining places past and present that used to be gay. Angelos takes the audience on a shamelessly nostalgic journey visiting the sites of former discos, feminist healthcare providers, shabby apartments, theatres, bars, and bathhouses that once proliferated providing gay people and outsiders with an astonishing array of options for socializing, organizing, hooking up, finding themselves, and each other.

mentor profile

What interests you about mentoring?

“Working with younger artists helping them make work for live performance! And a side order of gay mentorship, which goes in both directions.”

Given your experience and interests, what kind of emerging artist do you feel best positioned to support?

“I can help someone write/finesse scripts. I can introduce them to the theatre /performance people of NYC and I love seeing shows with my people!”

As a mentor, what would you like to offer an emerging artist? What would you like to receive?

“I am the kind of mommy who is going to encourage so if tough love is what you're looking for, maybe not me. Talking through whatever work is on the stove, seeing shows, seeing art, enjoying the embarrassment of wealth of work in NYC. If remote, same applies and maybe field trips can be arranged via FaceTime!”

Have you had mentors of your own? Who have they been?

“Unofficially, Peggy Shaw, Lois Weaver, Deb Margolin and all the folks I have met and worked with at WOW Cafe Theater.”

This Mentor is open to working with Fellows either remotely or in-person!
