2025 BARBARA HAMMER GRANT FINALIST
CHISA HUGHES
Chisato Hughes uses film to imagine new forms of relating and worldbuilding. Their first film, Many Moons (Third World Newsreel), explores Chinese ghosts and placemaking in the Northern California county where they grew up. Chisa will direct Behind the Horizon Line with support from timetides cooperative. Their work has shown at SFMOMA, UCLA’s Film & Television Archive, and Lightwork, amongst others. timetides cooperative is a transnational group of nonbinary and women filmmakers. Rooted in care and specificity, we commit to each other’s visions through shared study, co-creation, and exchange. Our projects move with the tides: from a film led by coastal Indigenous voices on California missions, to a queer diaspora fundraiser for immigration fees, to producing a public performance on life after Beirut's explosion.
