Ariella Tai an experimental filmmaker, video and installation artist as well as a film educator and programmer from Queens, NY currently based in Portland, OR. All facets of their practice are rooted in fostering spaces for critical spectatorship around film and media, with a focus on film from the Black Diaspora. As an artist, they create experimental, sample-based films and installations using digital and analog video processing tools. They use glitch, editing and sound design to explore alternate storylines, endings and futures in order to consider their own relationships to this media. Their video and film methods are heavily informed by research and pedagogical practices that center Black feminist and queer experimental film history, theory and literature.
