QUEER|ART|PRIDE is an annual summer showcase of new and recently completed work by Alumni of Queer|Art|Mentorship.

Queer|Art
is excited to present Queer|Art|Pride 2020—the fourth edition of the annual summer festival celebrating work by the organization’s vibrant Queer|Art|Mentorship community of more than 160 LGBTQ+ artists. Queer|Art|Pride 2020 convenes a diverse network of artists, performers, writers, and creatives to offer an extravaganza of public programs taking place online and over Zoom on Monday evenings throughout June and July. The Queer|Art|Pride Book & Print Fair remains the centerpiece of Queer|Art|Pride and has been re-conceived this year as a digital marketplace open from June through July, with work available for sale by 30+ participating artists, activated through two SHOW N’ TELL sessions taking place in July.

Queer|Art|Pride 2020 coincides with the launch of the 10th season of Queer|Art|Mentorship, the cornerstone creative and professional development program for LGBTQ+ artists - with applications opening on June 1.

Organized as the centerpiece of Queer|Art|Pride 2020, this year's Queer|Art|Pride Book & Print Fair has been transformed into a digital marketplace, featured on Queer|Art's website from June through July. Curated in the spirit of abundance, the marketplace features an incredible diversity of works for perusal and purchase, including (but not limited to) artist books, novels, zines, poetry chapbooks, drawings, photographs, watercolors, garments, collages, and prints. 100% of sales benefit the artists.

The online marketplace is accompanied by live Book & Print Fair Show ‘n Tells, taking place over Zoom on Mondays, July 6 & 27 from 8-10 pm EST. Artists participating in the digital marketplace will read excerpts of their works, offer a show ‘n tell of what they have for sale, and more.

QUEER|ART|FILM

Queer|Art|Film Club: Baseera Khan Presents PAKEEZAH
Monday, June 22nd – 8pm-9pm EST

Queer|Art|Film Club: Deborah Bright Presents THE HUNGER
Monday, July 13th – 8pm-9pm EST

Organized by curators Adam Baran and Heather Lynn Johnson, this special “stay-at-home” season of the long-running screening series— titled Queer|Art|Film Club has been reformatted in the style of a digital book club: viewers are invited to watch films on their own before joining guest presenters online for an interactive discussion. Taking place entirely online, Queer|Art|Film Club will consider the secret queer pleasures of watching movies alone and reckon with questions of safety and isolation that shape queer lives on a daily basis—not only during global pandemics, but throughout our entire lives. Come be alone with us together.

About PAKEEZAH
This 1972 Bollywood musical love story set in turn-of-the-century India stars Meena Kumari as an Indo-Islamic tawai’if (courtesan) who is trained in the art of love but forbidden to fall into it. Director Kamal Amrohi relies on the suffocating, deeply entrenched battle between traditional values and the fear of difference (in this case, an independent woman) suggesting that safety and respectability is only found in the arms of a husband. The legend around the making of this film and the tortured romance between director and star adds to the salacious delight of PAKEEZAH, which translates into “the pure one”. As a native-born Muslim American artist, guest presenter Baseera Khan will explain how this film “became her coat of arms and system of protection,” while growing up in Texas.

About THE HUNGER
This erotically charged vampire film, directed by Tony Scott, has all the delights and horrors of 80s era excess, including shoulder-pads, David Bowie, gothic nightclubs, flowing curtains, slow-motion doves and rapid aging. Susan Sarandon and Catherine Deneuve play star-crossed lovers whose fates become intertwined in what photographer and artist Deborah Bright recalls as “one of the absolute BEST lesbian love scenes in mainstream film.” Beautifully sublime sets, art directed by Clinton Cavers with Stephen Goldblatt’s cinematography, elevates the horror genre into a poetic artifice of decadence and decay. Commended for its queer themes at the height of the AIDS epidemic, Bright saw this movie soon after coming out and found this “visually over the top, very noir and creepy” cult favorite resonating with her and other “adventurous lesbians.”

MEET THE MENTORS

Queer|Art|Pride: Meet The Mentors
Thursday, June 11th – 6pm-7:30pm

“Meet the Mentors” is a QAM info session for artists who are interested to apply to the program and an opportunity to introduce our new cohort of Mentors. During the event, Mentors of the upcoming 2020-2021 program cycle will be invited to share about their work, their interests in mentorship, and some of the ways they feel they are best suited to mentor another artist. It's also a moment for you to meet some of the other Mentors and Fellows in our community and hear from them about their experiences in the program.

Prospective applicants are encouraged to RSVP for this Q&A Session with Queer|Art Staff, Mentors, and Fellows, taking place over Zoom on Thursday, June 11th at 6pm-7:30pm. RSVP is required, click below for details.
